Paul Thomas is an ex-soldier diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who came to Coleg Menai for a solution to a problem he encountered whilst taking his children for a walk up Snowdon.
Whilst on the mountain, Paul tried to teach them some map reading techniques – however explaining the way in which the contours represent elevation quickly became a struggle.  With no physical 3D maps readily available, Paul asked CAM for assistance.

Project
Using Ordnance Survey map data, CAM was able to accurately recreate the contours and elevations of Snowdon within SolidWorks to produce a 3D elevation of the mountain.
From this an ABS rapid prototype was made using the Dimension SST 3D printer to produce a scale replica of Snowdon that you can truly hold in your hand.
Paul developed his own moulding process using the rapid prototype as a master pattern, enabling him to set up production in-house and manufacture entirely by hand.

Outcome
Snowdon was released in 2007 and became a hugely successful product in North Wales.  Using CAM's further assistance Paul has been able to expand his range with Tryfan, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, The Great Orme and Bardsey Island.
